Opel has released the first photographs of the forthcoming Opel Astra Electric, the brand's first all-electric production model. The Astra Sports Tourer Electric is an electric station wagon introduced by the Rüsselsheim-based firm.
"The Opel Astra Electric and Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric are true trailblazers: with the new battery-electric variants of the five-door and station wagon, consumers will be able to drive in luxury, comfort, and above all, with a lot of driving enjoyment with no local emissions in the future" CEO Florian Huettl explains.
The Opel Astra and Opel Astra Sports Tourer are already available as electrified plug-in hybrid models, including the new, particularly sporty Opel Astra GSe, and combustion engines. Orders for the completely battery-powered Astra Electric will be accepted beginning in April 2023.
The electric motor in the Opel Astra electric car produces 115 kW/156 horsepower and 270 Newton meters of maximum torque. This means that top speeds of 170 km/h are feasible, while certification values are not yet available. A 54 kWh lithium-ion battery stores the energy. According to the WLTP standard, the batteries ensure that the new Opel Astra Electric can go 416 kilometers per charge.
"The engineers placed a high value on efficient packaging and were able to provide an excellent range with a tiny battery capacity," says Opel. The new Opel Astra Electric uses only 12.7 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers (14.9 kWh according to WLTP). It is thus not only the ideal everyday companion but also an ideal motorhome as a five-door variant or as a station wagon Sports Tourer saves time on longer travels."
The new Opel Astra electric car can be charged up to 100 kW with direct current at public charging stations; thus, the battery should be fully charged in around 30 minutes. Furthermore, the standard model includes a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger for quick AC charging at the wall box.
Because the batteries are kept under the underbody, no inside space is sacrificed for passengers or luggage. The Astra Sports Tourer Electric has 516 liters of cargo space with the rear seats up. When the seats are folded down, the capacity rises to 1553 liters, as with the plug-in hybrid version. "Another benefit: The low position of the battery also allows the Astra Electric and Astra Sports Tourer Electric to be even more sturdy on the road," Opel claims. The Astra uses the same Efficient Modular Platform 2 (EMP2) as the Peugeot e-308 electric car.
The Opel Astra electric car is available in every trim level with the brand face "Opel Vizor," including a more dynamic front bumper. In addition, standard 18-inch light alloy wheels in diamond cut or entirely black are available. It is unknown how much Astra will cost.
The current Opel Astra sedan starts at 25,510 euros, while the hatchback starts at 26,610 euros. The plug-in hybrid models start at 38,650 euros and go up to 39,750 euros. The Opel Astra electric car is expected to cost well over 40,000 euros. This estimated price is much under the Opel Grandland GSe plug-in hybrid. @via Opel.
