Polestar, the electric car brand owned by Volvo and Geely, has announced that it has started production of its third model, the Polestar 3. The electric SUV is being built at the Ridgeville plant in South Carolina, USA, where it will also be sold to the North American market.
What is the Polestar 3?
The Polestar 3 is a premium electric SUV that will compete with the likes of the Tesla Model Y, the Audi e-tron, and the Mercedes-Benz EQC. It is based on the SPA2 platform, which is Volvo’s new architecture for electric and hybrid vehicles. The Polestar 3 will share some components and features with the upcoming Volvo XC90 Recharge, which is also expected to debut in 2022.
The Polestar 3 will have a sleek and aerodynamic design inspired by the Polestar Precept concept that was unveiled in 2020. The Precept showcased Polestar’s vision for a sustainable and futuristic car, with a minimalist and digital interior, a large touchscreen, and a lidar sensor on the roof. The Polestar 3 will also have a large panoramic glass roof, a spacious cabin, and a generous cargo space.
The Polestar 3 will offer high performance and long range thanks to its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system and large battery pack. The exact specifications have not been revealed yet, but Polestar has hinted that the Polestar 3 will have a range of over 300 miles on a single charge and a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds. The Polestar 3 will also support fast charging and will be compatible with the Electrify America network in the US.
The Polestar 3 will also feature advanced technology and safety systems, such as the Polestar Digital Key, allowing drivers to access and start the car with their smartphone. The Polestar 3 will also have over-the-air updates, enabling the car to receive software improvements and new features remotely. The Polestar 3 will also have Pilot Assist, Volvo’s semi-autonomous driving system and can communicate with other Polestar and Volvo cars through Vehicle-to-Vehicle technology.
